Abstract: ABSTRACT
Family manufactures and small companies are the typical paper producers in the craft settlement Phu lam-Bac Ninh (Viet nam).
A clean and healthy water supply is vital to society, but there is not any treatment system for papermaking wastewater in this craft settlement, thus number of environmental problems have created such as sediment, water and soil pollution. It also causes serious community health problems. The main objective of this work is to investigate a simple, reliable, inexpensive and relatively effective method and apparatus for treating wastewater from such small paper producers as in craft settlement Phu lam-Bac ninh (Viet nam).
This method offers the use of biological treatment (activated sludge treatment at ambience temperature 20-40 oC) to remove the pollutants faster than if nothing were used without the hazardous and difficulties associated with chemical treatment.
Experimental activated sludge treatment apparatus for a papermaking waste water according to the present paper includes: feeding tank, primary clarifier, aerated basin, secondary clarifier, receiving tank for treated effluent(water). In this activated sludge system the influent is delivered to a primary clarifier, in which solids are allowed to settle. The wastewater then passes to an aerated basin, and then to a secondary clarifier where sludge is recycled to pass through the aerated basin again.
From the data obtained by this experimental treatment apparatus it was found that COD has been decreased from 2085 mg/l to 38mg/l(approximately 98%), and BOD5-from 1420 mg/l to 25(approximately 98%) after 56 hours from beginning of the treatment. The treated effluent (water) responds the standards for effluents of class “B” and can be recycled as a process water or discharged to pubic waterways. On the basis of the experimental data the further study on apparatus construction has been done for the volume of paper making waste water of about 7-12 m3/24 hours (typically for the family and small companies in the craft settlement Phu lam).
